January Birthdays are all done!

We did a 3 in 1 party for the Randall's January birthdays this year. We celebrated Bryan #45, Afton #10, Brady #16. It was good to get together a little (even with Covid still going strong) and enjoy each others company and visit.  And we all enjoyed Afton's yummy birthday dinner and cake!

Last up for January was Brendon celebrating #12!  We made a stop over with some Crumbl Birthday cookies.  He's a BIG Lego/Star Wars fan, so hopefully we made him happy with another set to build!

These are some really wonderful folks and we love them all.  It's crazy to see these grandkids growing up!  Makes me feel a little old!!!

More mini-golf fun - Brynnli & Braden, etc.

Yea!  Brynnli and Braden finally got some time off from school/work and were not cooped up from Covid, so we got to spend a little fun time with them and Ferf and some of the kids.  Afterwards we enjoyed pizza, salad and brownies together!

Movie time at last!

Strange as it may seem to write about it, we haven't been to a movie at the theater for months since the Covid-19 epidemic hit.  We were nervous about going the other night for a date, but we chose a weeknight when we thought it wouldn't be busy and wore masks the whole time.  And there ended up being only 9 people (that includes us) in the theater.  They came and made sure people were sitting in the seats they purchased so they would be far enough apart I guess.  They had one guy that wasn't in his purchased seat move.  So, it ended up being a nice date...mostly just like old times!

The Christmas Tree!

We got our Christmas tree pretty early this year.  I was worried it wouldn't last well because it has been SO DRY this year.  We haven't had hardly any rain.  We went to get it the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  It turned into a bit of an adventure when we got stuck in the tiniest bit of snow and mostly mud on a little downhill slope.  Usually we wouldn't even have been able to drive on this road in our 2-wheel drive little pick up, but we actually made it a little ways in because there was pretty much no snow except in shady spots.  But we did find a way to get stuck.  We tried a lot of things, but finally settled on digging up dirt and putting it behind the wheels to made a path.  Between that and Paul's great driving skills, we got unstuck.  And then we looked for Christmas trees.  We got a really cute one for Anna Lou and then found a pretty good one for us back in among lots of fallen trees that we had to climb over to get it out.  It needed a little trimming when we got it set up, but turned out to be a pretty nice tree.  And then last night - the 19th - we saw that it is actually sprouting new little needles!  We have never had a tree do that!  Here I was worried that it would be dry and dropping needles like crazy before Christmas even came and instead it's alive and growing!  Very unusual to say the least!

Covid ornaments, masks and birthdays

Every year Juge's family get an ornament for their tree to reflect something about the year.  This year she made one for all of us.  Very appropriate!

Fun mask reminder at a Hawaiian restaurant.

We celebrated Gaige's #15 with masks on.  A week later the Borrowman grandparents (pictures) came down sick with Covid they probably caught from a son-in-law living at their house.

Thanksgiving and Christmas tree harvesting

Well, we did it...and we are still doing it!  Eating turkey I mean!  We had a nice, very small Thanksgiving with Paul, me, Bean and Grandma Kurtz.  The food was all delicious and we had a nice time visiting.  We missed having other family join with us, but Covid-19 has made lots of things different than we hoped for this year.

Afterwards we drove up via Parowan to Cedar Mountain.  We made it up to the end of Brian Head before we had to turn around because the road was icing up.  The wind was blowing snow flurries sideways.  It was beautiful, but not to be driven in.  We were looking to see if we'd be able to come up the next day to get Christmas trees.

Luckily today's weather was much improved, and we did make it up and did get a tree for us and for Grandma.  (She got the better tree I think.)  It wasn't without excitement...kind of as usual.  We were able to drive up a little side road since not much snow at all is on the ground up there yet.  But as we came over a rise we went just a little too far and started down the other side where there was more snow...and got promptly stuck in our weak, not 4-wheel drive little pickup.  Paul tried pushing while I drove backing up.  Didn't work.  Then I got in the back to add weight...didn't work, he got in the back...didn't work.  We put towels under the back tires for some traction...didn't work.  The we got lots of dirt and put it under the back tires...didn't work...until Paul went forward just a bit then hit reverse hard and we hit that dirt and moved back several feet.  We added dirt again and made a trail back with it and did the same again...and we got out!!!  Thankfully those prayers came through.  Sometimes I don't really feel too good about asking for help when we are just kind of dumb and get ourselves into these fixes.

Happy 46th Anniversary to us!

I can't believe we've been married so long!  And it's still so fun!  Paul came up with a great idea for a little get away for this year.  Monday is actually the day, but we went on Friday/Sat. up to Midway Utah and stayed a night at the Homestead House Resort.  That sounds a little bit fancier than it was, but it was really nice.  It's a cute resort with different "houses" spread all around their property.  We stayed in the Farmhouse.  Kind of old fashioned, antique type furnishings.  It's probably a lot prettier when it's not winter, but it's still really pretty with lots of winding paths between the houses and grass and big trees.  And the thing we really went for is that it has this giant crater that you can go inside of and swim in a hot spring pool that's inside!  The water comes up from below and is 90 degrees.  You come ready to swim; we had our jogging suits on over our swimsuits.  It was really pretty cold outside (our time to swim and soak was at 6:30 pm), and then put your stuff in a locker, get a life jacket on and just float and swim around this lovely warm pool inside this rock crater that is all around with just a little hole on top.  They keep the hole covered with a tarp in winter so the air inside stays warmer like the water.  Otherwise you'd be seeing daylight above you through that hole.  We had fun just because it's so unique.  Just looks like an ugly old mound on the outside and then inside is this beautiful, warm aqua colored pool.  People were using snorkels and masks and some people were having scuba lessons there too.  Probably about 30 people inside altogether.  After your time is up, you get out dry off and put on your warm clothes and go back outside to your car really quick this time of year so you don't freeze to death!  We love seeing and doing new things and this was just right.  The town of Midway is a beautiful combination of old time houses and crazy awesome gigantic/beautiful mansions.

On our way up we stopped at Beaver to get cheese.  We also stopped a few places to look for things Paul was needing and found a wonderful birthday present/Gore-Tex jacket at REI.  We love looking in sporting goods shops.  And we ate yummy lunch in Fillmore at Costa Vida (had to eat outside because of Covid-19).  After our swim/soak we got dinner at Panda Express and took it to our room to eat it because you can't eat inside there either.  Then we walked over to the Lodge and enjoyed a few games of checkers (reminiscent of our honeymoon where we drew a checkerboard and used different colored tissue wads for men).  Then we explored the lodge and learned more about the crater and town's history.

The next day we had really yummy breakfast in the Lodge restaurant.  I tried eggs benedict and loved it.  It was really good food and fast.  Then we enjoyed exploring the grounds some and did a little Xmas shopping there and then headed out. We stopped by Temple Square and walked around to see how the temple update is coming along and enjoyed walking through the City Creek Mall. Then we stopped in at a giant Costco in Salt Lake for a few things ours doesn't carry.  Then we lunched in Orem and picked up some Krispy Kreme donuts to bring home (ate some too).  We listened to a good book on the way when we had finished just enjoying talking.  All in all, it was just a fun, relaxing, remembering wonderful time to get away and enjoy time together.

Eliza Rae Lillywhite - Baptism day - in spite of Covid-19

We've enjoyed 3 baptisms of grand children this year, and all of them have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.  At Tahlia's we had to limit numbers and change the regularly scheduled date that it would have happened.  Trigg waited a few months until we could have a bigger group of people attend if we had it outside - he was baptized in a good friend's swimming pool.  And now Eliza had her baptism, Saturday, November 7th.  We had pretty small numbers allowed and other people watched it on Zoom (the other 2 had that option also), and we couldn't gather outside afterwards for treats as had originally been planned. (It would have been too cold anyway.)  One cool thing was knowing that just a couple of blocks away amid the wind and cold, the new Red Cliffs Temple dedication ceremony was underway.  It was a very few people could attend event also.  Hopefully it will be broadcast sometime.  Who knows, maybe Eliza will get married there some time in the future!  It was a lovely baptism and she seemed very happy.  Her dad baptized and confirmed her.  It's one of those "shout for joy" events that we are so happy to have happen.  And it's even better when it happens when life has been so crazy all year with this dumb disease disrupting so many things that are important in our lives.  So happy for Eliza!

Here's some birthday fun!

Happy Baptism Trigg!

Covid-19 took its toll on even this.  Trigg's bday is in May, but at that time his baptism would have been almost impossible with the way things were shut down.  Trigg decided to wait a little while for things to open up so that he could have more people come and join with him to be part of this important step in his life.  Finally things are open enough that if he had it outdoors he could have the people he wanted most to be there and others could join by watching live in a Zoom session via computer.  Saturday, August 19th, we gathered in the backyard of a good friend to witness Trigg's baptism.  His dad did the honors of that and his confirmation.  It was very nice and good to see family there that we hadn't seen for a while from the Smith side.  All went well, and now we are glad that Trigg was finally able to do this!

Beaver Camp Out and Miner's Park Bears!

Next week it's back to school for me, so we decided to escape the heat and camp up in the Tushar's above Beaver.  I hate the getting ready, but I'm always glad afterwards.  We had wonderful food because of Paul as always - his BBQ chicken stew with garlic cheese biscuits and for our first time, Woofem's (or whop, whops as the Brook's call them) for dessert.  Then we had leftover biscuits and hashbrown  omelets, and applesauce for breakfast with hot chocolate to warm with while we waited for it to cook.  All very yummy!  We took a nice evening walk to look for elk, but a 4-wheeler passed us and probably scared anything we might have seen away.  Also, I was crabby about 2 trailers parked for indefinite periods of time in a couple of favorite camp spots.  And when we checked another one there was a tent and camp chairs there.  On the way back from our walk when it was getting late to be coming back to camp Paul walked over to check to see if anyone was really camped there and found the tent was empty...just an old one and old chairs left there as a camp place holder by some other selfish person.  I so wanted to take the tent and chairs and put them in the woods where no one could see them and I also wanted to write on the trailers with a permanent marker expressing my thoughts on leaving trailers parked on public lands for long periods of unused time!!!  I probably would have except that Paul and Bean just ignored my rants.  But, we did find a new, pretty nice spot and did fine there.

After putting away camp in the morning, we drove over the mountains via Big John's Flat and then down to Mary'sville and  up to Miner's Park.  We looked around there and then Paul and I hiked  up to see Bullion Falls.  It's kind of steep, hot hike with just a far away view of the falls unfortunately.  (We tried a different trail to see it that became dangerous and impassible first.)  After lunch as we were driving back down to Mary'sville we came around a corner to see a mother bear and two cubs in the road.  Looked like they had come down to get a drink from the stream at the side of the road.  Paul was able to get a few pretty good pictures through the windshield.  Crazy.  First time seeing bears like that.  They hightailed it up the hillside into the brush very quickly as we inched closer to get a better picture.  It was a steep hillside, but that didn't slow them down a bit.  We've seen people bear hunting up in that area before.  Now we know there really are bears up there.  We didn't see any goats as we came over the pass from Big John's unfortunately.  We had a nice back roads drive home and then used a birthday gift card for some yummy dinner.  Great last fling before getting back to the grind.

Unfortunately, with all of the Covid-19 restrictions we are going to have to deal with at school and after last year's pretty awfulness with the new administrations demands for constant testing and interventions, the teacher's crabbiness/stress because of that, feeling caught in the middle of the interventionist and the teacher, and the stupid things they did to mess up our OEK lunch routine, I'm not overly excited about going back to school this year.  I've always been looking forward to it before, but if I didn't want to pay off the car with my earnings so much, I might not have even gone back.  I'm of that high risk age group and would really be justified in just quitting altogether.  So, I'll give it a try and see how it goes, but if things go south again, I may quit.  We'll see.

Happy Baptism Day Tahlia!

We had such a nice time going to Tahlia's baptism.  Only 20 people were allowed to attend the event.  She picked and chose and we were happy to be on the list of chosen.  When we got down to it, there were less people because of some getting sick and not knowing if it was Covid-19 and even if it wasn't they didn't want to come sick.  So it was a small, but loving gathering.  We also had such a nice time just being there to visit Jay, Brynn and girls.  We brought Sarai up with us and Sarai and Afton home with us (Afton rode up earlier with her mom).  On the way up we had fun taking a very long route to see some beautiful things we had been wanting to check out - Joe's Valley, Orangeville, Spring Town and going over and down the mountain to Ephraim.  It was an adventure with 26 miles of dirt road we hadn't expected.  But it turned out well and we loved seeing the beautiful valley's, mountains, reservoir and the old stone buildings in Spring Town.  When we got there it was a house full of girls having such fun playing together.  They played and played and for the most part got along famously.  After the baptism we had a little dinner - again small - before heading home.  It was nice to see some of Brynn's family at the baptism and after at the dinner.  Such nice people they all are!  Tahlia is a blessed little girl to have such a wonderful family to love and support her in her journey here on earth!  Happy Baptism Tahlia!  WE LOVE YOU!

He's here! Jem Kekahuaina Lillywhite!

Yea!  Here's some wonderful news amid all of the crappy news happening in the world right now!  Supe and Beacher's little guy made it here safe and sound, and Beacher did too.  I'm just going to copy Supe's birth announcement.  We are always excited to have these little ones join the family.  Jem makes #26!  Now we are even at 13 boys/13 girls!  And now we have 3 boys including Jem, Brenden and Kai who will carry the Lillywhite name forward for this part of the family!  We were sorry not to be able to at least be at the hospital or go there afterwards to see Jem and Beacher and Supe, but the Covid-19 keeps us at a distance for now.  So tiresome it is!!!  Birthday - Wednesday, July 8th, 2020. A little piece of heaven here with us!

The Jem Child has arrived!  He was pretty dang good about it.  He let Kal sleep in till 7 am before starting contractions, only made her labor for 8 hours and push for 40 minutes.  Showed up on his due date, 2 days after Kal's birthday and 5 days before mine.  Kal was incredible.  She did it with no meds.  It was really hard at some points and she definitely reconsidered that choice but by then it was kind too late.  Watching her struggle made me feel supe helpless and scared.  Really hard to see someone you love much in pain and working so hard at doing something so unknown to us.  The nurses were really great tho and helped so much.  Then Dr. Lunt came and guided akal through the pushing so well.  It looked so hard!  Kal is the toughest person I know (like stupid amounts of pain tolerance and dedication) and to see or working that hard was really intense and emotional for me (and her obviously).  She did awesome and after 40 minutes he was here!  Supe white and slimy haha.  Some brown fuzz.  I thought his hands looked like chicken feet (which we've been feeding to Auri our dog lately).  But then he was able to go snuggle up with Kal and it was one of the coolest things ever!

Both Kal and Jem are doing good now.  I think Kal maybe slept an hour last night but hopefully that will increase soon.  Dr. Lunt and Dr. Clark have both been by this morning.  Supe good guys!  Jem's full name is Jem Kekahuaina Lillywhite.  Jem is from To Kill a Mockingbird, one of our favorite books. Also named after the Jem trail, one of the best mountain bike trail of all time.  Kekahuaina is Hawaiian (Jem is 1/8th Hawaiian) it means Guardian of the land.  But no just like land as in a plot of land.  Like the land and people and animals and stuff.  PRetty cool we thought.  Kekahu is a famly name from Kal's side.

Jem weighed 55 lbs when born, but magically shrunk to 7 lbs. 10 ounces when they weighed him. Weird.  He is 20 inched tall. Or long.  He's pretty freaking awesome.  He like to eat a lot and poop lots of black stuff.  He hates it when I change his diaper and loves it when mom holds him.  Seems to be indifferent about me singing to him.  So glad Kal and Jem are here safe!  Love you. 😘😘

And here's Kal's report:

Jem decided he wanted to come right on his due date and be in on this week of birthday celebrations!! (Mom's is July 6th and Dad's is July 13th) I don't think he could've made it any easier for me during labor unless he just magically floated out, but I guess I can't be too picky, so heavens bless you baby haha.  Iam so grateful for Supe for being with me every step of the way.  Any brief moment he had to be away from me while I was laboring were the hardest for me.  I love you!!

And here's our report:

We got to meet Jem on Friday, July 10th.  We came with masks on and got to visit with the new parents and hold Jem.  He's a really cute little guy and looked so good for having just gone through that whole birthing process.  We are so happy to have him here with his mom and dad and good dog Auri!  She seems to be happy to have him as part of the family too!  We look forward to getting to know this little one and hope for a wonderful life for him!  He has come into this world during a really crazy time.  And I don't know...we are getting into lots of crazy times to come in the future it feels like.  I'm so happy he has wonderful parents to take care of him and teach him.  And we will leave it to them and Heavenly Father...and all of the rest of us who love him, to help him have that wonderful life we hope for with every child that comes to join our family.

Today is July 19th.  And today is the day I got to hold Jem (without my mask on) and finally get a picture with him.  He's such a cutie all bundled up in his burrito wrap!

More Covid-19 and other crazy things

We needed to go to NM to pick up some rock to match another job that we are adding to.  We were excited to go so we could stay with Ross and Lerlyn again and enjoy going over the CO mountains and especially because we'd seen on-line that Ouray Hot Springs was opening up again.  We could stop for a swim en route at our all-time favorite swimming hole!  But it was not to be...when we got there people were lined up and in their swimming suits.  Paul went to the front to find out what the deal was and found out that you had to be ready to go because dressing rooms/lockers were on a very limited basis due to Covid-19.  OK.  So we went in crazy small bathrooms in the park and got changed.  Then Paul and Bean went to re-park the truck/trailer in a better place while I got in line.  After not very long they started letting people in and then there was an announcement - 50 people had been let in and that was all they were letting in for the next 2 hours.  This was at 5 pm-ish.  If someone came out early, others could go in, but otherwise you could wait and see if you could get into the next session.  They closed at 9 pm.  So, unfortunately unless you had called and listened to their message you could not have known this was the case.  We just saw it was open when we looked on-line. Not great communication of their policies.  So, we just headed on over the mountain to spend the night with Ross and Lerlyn.  We stopped at a park in Durango to eat dinner that we had brought in the ice chest.  Well, at least that way we had more time to visit that evening with Ross and Lerlyn.

I had a couple of interesting experiences while there that gave me pause to think about all of the social unrest that has been happening of late, amid the other unrest caused by Covid-19, because of a black man who was killed by police officers who held him down while handcuffed, one kneeling on his neck until he quit breathing (he kept telling the officer he couldn't breathe).  That has caused major protests through out the country, even the world, because of the way police treat black suspects.  Many of the protests have been taken over by rioters who caused a ton of damage destroying property, looting and even killing in the name of the peaceful protests.  It has not been good and seems to be getting very out of hand in many places with protesters calling for the police to be defunded and even saying that we should not have police.  I have read a lot of things, pro and con about the whole issue and can see that there are problems on both sides, but the way things are being handled is not helping to remedy the problem.  Some people are organizing and trying to effect changes in ways much more positive and sane.  But it's hard to keep a clear perspective in the middle of the mess.

Then while we were on our little trip we ran into a experience of our own - well really it was Lerlyn's experience that she told me about.  I shared it with family and friends via Group me and on Facebook.  Probably shouldn't have shared it on FB, but it was interesting to see the responses.  Made me think.  Here's what I shared with family:

Group me:  We are on a rock trip and stayed with Ross and Lerlyn last night. In the evening talking she said she’d been working at the stone yard the other day (Lillywhite Stone) when a black man stopped in and proceeded to tell her they needed to change the name of their business. She said that it was a family business with the family name. He looked skeptical. She showed him their business card with Ross’s name and explained that it was an English name and quite common in England. He got it, but still wasn’t too happy and didn’t buy anything. Do we really need to give up our family name so as not to offend the tenderhearted fools?

Facebook:  Stopped by the old family business while on a rock trip. Paul’s brother runs it now. And guess what? Someone came in to tell them they should change the name because it was offensive. Is the word white now a reason to be offended? It’s a racist word now? Give me a break. Lillywhite Stone.

Pretty much everyone thought this was a crazy deal and that for a person to think they could demand such a thing was totally unreasonable.  One person pointed out that it was a great step forward from past history to have a black person think they could speak out in such a way without getting killed or otherwise in trouble, which is probably true.  But others said it still way out of line for someone to think they can demand such a thing in the name of being offended by it.  Someone told about a family member asking for "black coffee" and being rebuffed for using that word to describe coffee.  They were told they should say "plain coffee" so as not to offend.  So, it goes on in silly little skirmishes that really remedy nothing and just get people hot under the collar and cause more friction in a place where there's already enough friction.  Lawful and peaceful ways to effect change are what we need.

Next experience from Facebook post:

Came over to NM to get a certain kind of stone to match an existing job we are adding to. Had to go to the boonies to meet a guy and pick it up. Had some bad luck on the way back and made it to town just in time to run out of fuel in our diesel truck...and then noticed a tire going flat. Actually good luck that we made it to town. Bean and I walked not too far to get fuel, but needed to walk more to get a gas can. Couldn’t go inside to buy it because we forgot our masks in the truck. No way would they let us inside. But a kind security guard did buy it for us and then insisted on giving us a ride to get gas and then back to the truck. Paul had the tire changed by then. All those times Paul stopped to offer help if needed to those at the side of the road came back to our aid. Thanks to Shar the security guard at O’Reilly Auto Parts in Gallup, NM, for her kind heart. And remember your masks! Just a side note: we were 2 white faces in a sea of brown. I was feeling a little lost. Shar made us feel just like people who needed help. A good example to all.

So, in this experience I really got to feel how it is to be in the minority and needing help.  I tried to go into a grocery store next door to the parts store to get a gas can and the security guard there was absolutely unswayed by my telling him of our predicament.  He was following the law, but had no suggestions as to how we could get our gas can and get on our way.  He was actually pretty harsh, and maybe just a little more so because of my white skin it felt like.

Here are some drive by and other shots of scenery on our way home via Page.  It was an OK trip, but not my favorite.  It was nice to visit with Ross and Lerlyn.  They are kind and generous hosts.  Bean seemed to have a good time on the trip too, even without the swim outing we were hoping for.
